Making a Kumanofude (Part 4 Last)

10. "Kurikomi" (Inserting a fude tip into a fude handle”

"Kurikomi" is a process of inserting the fude tip into a fude handle. Fude handles are made of materials such as bamboo and cherry trees. We shave off the inside of a handle evenly while the fude handle is rotated so that a fude tip will be easily inserted into the handle.

11. "Finishing"

The seaweed glue is applied to the fude tip in the process of "Finishing." This is an important process to keep fude tip cone-shaped and to ensure that the fude lasts for a long time. The seaweed glue is applied to the whole fude tip with a pounding motion so that the fude tip will absorb the glue thoroughly. Any excess glue is removed by using a thread. A linen thread is wrapped around the fude tip and by turning the handle of the fude, and the excess glue gets squeezed out of the hair. The fude tip will be formed as cone-shaped beautifully.

12. "Engraving"

After the fude is naturally dried thoroughly, the signature of the each company, workshop, or name of fude is engraved on the fude handle. The fude is finally completed.
